Neuro-linguistic programming, also known as NLP, is a number of techniques that are used in order to enhance a person's personal development. Neuro-linguistic programming was formed by some of the previous ideas that were presented in the New Age era. These beliefs dealt with human growth and potential. The founders of NLP created a set of models that explore neurological and linguistic patterns, as well as perception and cognition of programming in order to create a more subjective reality and learn more about human behavior.

When NLP was first being studied the results and success stories were astonishing. For this reason, many people attempted to follow the path of NLP or attempted to create their own similar program with the goal of either helping people or making money. Unfortunately, with some of the later forms of NLP the imitation creators were not worried about the path to self-healing. They were more interested in the outcome of the progress in order to implement it in their own program.

The creators of NLP looked at several things when creating their models. They looked at tone of voice, use of words, posture, eye movement, and speaking patterns. These models were created and eventually would be used in many other fields of study to help people in all areas from law enforcement to coaching. The way that you communicate, along with helping you to improve your ability to communicate with others is the basis for NLP.

NLP was created because of the founder’s fascination with successful people. This was studied and added to other things like computer programming, psychology, and language. It is hard to define the true path of NLP. The makers purposely made it hard to define. However, researchers and people that have studied NLP say it works because the program teaches people how to program their brain, which helps them to change.

Neuro-linguistic programming allows people to learn the ins and outs of the brain in order to train it into doing what it should. NLP relies on three theories, which are used and looked at in NLP models.

1. The unconscious though influences conscious thoughts and actions

2. The use of metaphorical behavior (Freud)

3. The use of hypnotherapy

People using NLP are able to learn and teach communication. As they progress, they learn about the powers of persuasion and are able to successfully self-hypnotize themselves in order to create positive changes in their lives.

While there are several NLP critics, many people swear by this training method and all the good it has done for them. NLP is said to be able to change all the negative aspects of your life and create a new person in the process.
