Numerology

Throughout cultures, from Mesoamerica to Mesopotamia, numerology has been in use in one form or another. There are a hundred different systems that use numbers in a mystical sense to describe relationships between physical objects and the divine. Some forms of numerology are ancient, such as sacred geometry; others are much more recent, such as the Elliot wave principle of stock market analysis, which uses numerical patterns rather than other more accepted methods for predicting stock marked fluctuations.

The most common method used by modern numerologists is digit summing. In this, each letter in a name is assigned a number from one to nine, and then all the digits in the name are added together. The number assignation is easy: A-I are represented by 1-9; then J-R by 1-9; and then S-Z by 1-8. (You can simply give them the numbers 1-26, but the digits of each double-digit number, added together, give you the same number as in the earlier system. For instance, S = 19 = 1+9 = 10 = 1+0 = 1.)

When your name has been summed, you wind up with a number from 1-9. Each number is given a definition to help understand who you are. If your summations reach the numbers 11 or 22, these numbers are held separate; they have slightly different meanings from 2 and 4 in many numerology systems and are referred to as the master numbers, and are thought to simply intensify the meanings of the 2 and 4 that would derive from them. These double-digit numbers indicate a high potential in the person who has them. The birthdate of a person, also, might be summed to gain a numerological insight; it is called the lifepath number.

The name used when divining numbers should be the full birth name given to the child, regardless of any changes that have happened along the way. The basic meanings of these traits include:

1 – positive: initiator of action, individualistic, strong will, courage; negative: assertion or aggression, dominating, impulsive, egotistic.

2 – positive: cooperation and adaptability, sensitivity, good partner, mediator, modest, spiritual, diplomatic; negative: shy, timid, fearful, self-conscious, tends to depression.

3 – positive: self-expressive, verbal, inspired, imaginative, optimistic; negative: scattered energy, unfinished projects, moody

4 – positive: ordered, values-oriented, grows steadily, practicality, organized; negative: lacks imagination, too rigid, argumentative, slow to act.

5 – positive: expansive, visionary ideas, quick thought, curious, resourceful; negative: restless, discontent, hasty to make decisions, impatient.

6 – positive: responsible, artistic, nurturing, community-oriented, humanitarian; negative: self-righteous, obstinate, dominating, meddling, egotistical.

7 – positive: analytical, good with research, seeker of truth, studious, loves solitude, perfectionist; negative: hidden motives, suspicious, too reserved, isolated.

8 – positive: politically skilled, powerful, good with authority, sound judgment, decisive; negative: workaholic, ambitious, mismanaging money, impatient with people, materialistic, stressed.

9 – positive: friendly and congenial, generous, selfless, creative, artistic, good writer; negative: self-adulization, possessive, moody, careless with finances, needs attention

In Chinese numerology, even numbers are considered lucky. Definitions of numbers include 2 – easy, 3 – live, 4 – unlucky, 5- the self or nothing, 6 – easy and smooth, 7 – together, 8 – sudden fortune or prosperity, and 9 – long time. These definitions are combined in longer numbers to have more complex meanings. A popular longer number is 168, which means “to be prosperous together.” It is a common number to change your phone number to. 888 means triple prosperity.
